Job Description

The Legal Services Unit (“LSU”) is AXA’s in-house legal department. It is responsible for managing litigated claims on behalf of AXA and its policyholders.

The LSU are seeking a Senior Defendant Paralegal to handle a challenging caseload consisting of fast track claims including personal injury, credit hire and bent metal disputes. Daily tasks will include drafting defences, witness statements, applications and preparing claims for trial.

What you’ll be doing:
  • Negotiating credit hire claims.
  • Concluding personal injury claims, MOJ and Fast Track matters whilst keeping indemnity spend and lifecycles to a minimum.

  • Coordinating/preparing statements and briefing counsel.
  • Provide commercially focused legal advice.
  • Adhering closely to client protocol and process.
  • Provide supervision and mentoring to Defendant paralegals.
  • Make an appropriate contribution to department e.g. knowledge sharing, training etc.

  • Comply with the required standards for internal procedures.


Skills required:

  • Strong technical skills and an ability to understand and work through complex issues.

  • Demonstrate an ability to adopt a commercial approach rather than an ‘academic’ attitude to legal issues and to be highly client focused.

  • Ability to operate with a high level of self-sufficiency, combined with an awareness of the boundaries of own competence/authority.

  • Team oriented with an experience of and a willingness to mentor, coach and supervise less experienced members of teams.

  • Confident communicator with an ability to develop relationships and influence at all levels.

  • Strong organisation skills to ensure a pragmatic and methodical approach to handling a variety of claims simultaneously, through an IT case management system.

  • Able to handle a complex and constantly changing workload and to work under pressure whilst maintaining the required quality.

  • Litigation experience required.
  • Previous personal injury experience is essential.
